The Roman Ridge School in Accra, Ghana, staged the first Cambridge IGCSE Art & Design Day on July 3, 2024. More than eighty art teachers and school leaders from around the nation came together for this historic occasion to investigate the Cambridge IGCSE Art syllabus and discuss creative approaches. Emphasizing the need for teamwork and honest communication in determining the direction of IGCSE Art education, Fay Head, Head of Arts, English & Languages Portfolio, Qualifications Development, coordinated the day.
The event consisted of two primary sessions, each meant to maximize attendees’ involvement and learning. First, teachers had the chance to provide their opinions and comments on the present Online Cambridge IGCSE Art & Design syllabus in a focus group session. This session sought to pinpoint areas needing development and compile recommendations from individuals interacting directly with students so that the curriculum stays pertinent and efficient.
The second session was a content and marking criteria workshop, which offered attendees valuable insights into the methodologies, tactics, and teaching strategies that most support the IGCSE Art syllabus. Teachers might improve their competency through this practical training and investigate fresh pedagogical approaches that fit their classrooms.
At the event, Fay Head said she appreciated the participants’ contributions: “The Art & Design Day was quite helpful in obtaining the opinions of teachers and professionals from Accra and the surrounding region. As a Qualifications Developer working on the future vision for the Cambridge Art & Design pathway, I found the knowledge of teachers who gave up their free time to attend beneficial. The event was successful because of guests’ cooperation and transparency.”
Patience Codjoe, an Aves International Academy Art and Design Teacher and IGCSE Coordinator, was among the attendees. “The most valuable part for me was when we discussed different topics inside different groups and shared our ideas after the discussion,” she said, referring to the event’s worth. It let me see what I previously knew from other points of view and learn new things first-hand through cooperation and communication.
The Cambridge IGCSE Art & Design syllabus seeks to raise aesthetic awareness, knowledge, and critical understanding of art. It allows students to acquire various skills while covering a broad spectrum of materials, tools, and resources. The syllabus is meant to use the teaching staff’s several competencies so that teachers may customize their approach to satisfy their pupils.
Events like the Cambridge IGCSE Art & Design Day help Cambridge International further its dedication to inspiring creativity and quality in education. The occasion not only underlined the need for cooperation among teachers but also prepared the ground for upcoming changes in the IGCSE Art syllabus that would benefit both teachers and students.
The future of art education in Ghana and abroad will be much more shaped by the thoughts and comments acquired from events like these as the Cambridge IGCSE Art & Design route develops. Using continuous cooperation and communication, Cambridge International seeks to give students a rich and exciting educational environment that motivates critical thinking and creativity.
